Arturo Fuente Anejo, No. 50

Yes, the much-anticipated Anejos arrived in-town last week.  I bought several of these bad-boys at a couple of shops around town and I smoked a No.50 at the poker game last week.  I can see what all the fuss is about now.

The Reserva No. 50 - Length: 5 1/4″ x Ring: 50 is a maduro wrapper and probably the smoothest cigar I have ever smoked.  No really, I mean it this time.  This cigar started smooth with full-flavored Fuente Maduro taste and was even the entire time.  I smoked it down to the very nub and it started to burn by fingers before the smoke ever got hot.  It was an incredibly enjoyable smoke, tightly wrapped, even burning with a good draw and plenty of smoke.  I rate this at an A+, it really doesn’t get much better than this.

El Rey De Los Habanos, Robusto

Since I have been so impressed with the Tatuaje and Don Pepin brands of cigars, I decided to try yet another Pepin signature Cigar.  For those who don’t know “El Rey do los Habanos” translates in spanish to King of the Cuban Cigars, and is also the name of Don Pepin Garcia’s Cigar Shop in Miami, FL.  There was an article about it in the latest issue of Cigar Aficianodo.

This cigar started out bitter and stayed that way through the first 1/3 of the smoke.  After that it developed a taste that would be like any old $2 cigar that you might buy in a gas station humidor.  Being that is was from Pepin, I was not at all impressed.  The thought crossed my mind that it might have been stored improperly from the shop I got it from, but it is a good shop in Arlington that has a good reputation, so I can’t imagine that is the case.  I might go ahead and try another, just to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I expected alot more from a Pepin Cigar.  Right now, I’d rate it at a C-

The vitola I smoked is the one at the bottom on this photo.

Don Pepin Garcia 1950, Black Band

I know that I have said this before, but this cigar was one of the smoothest smokes I have ever had.  This Don Pepin Garcia Black Edition (”Black Label”) 1950 Toro, 6 x 52 started cool, smooth and tasty and it stayed cool almost all the way to the end.  At the very last it did start to warm up a bit, but it never got too hot, IMO.  There was PLENTY of smoke also, which made for a thick and spicy aroma.   Compared to Pepin’s Tatuaje line, I think this Black Label rates just beneath it, but it also costs $1-$1.50 less than the Havana VI Nobles.  I would rate this cigar at an A-.

Arturo Fuente Canones

During our weekly poker game I often smoke 1 or 2 cigars, and since I have been wanting to try this cigar for a long time so I bought one this week before the game.
This cigar was an extremely excellent smoke.  You wouldn’t expect a cigar so long, measuring 8.5×52, to be hot at all and it wasn’t.  However at the same time you would think that the draw might be a bit tough, but it wasn’t.  It burned smooth, even, cool and had a very easy draw, especially for it’s size.

I lit it around 7pm and when the game ended shortly after 10pm it will still going, having about 3-4 inches left to burn.  It was just about the perfect size and length for a 3-4 hours game.  Next time I will probably light it about 30-60 minutes earlier.

Most places are getting $7.50-$8.50 for this cigar, but I found a place here locally that sells them for $6 flat.  A GREAT price for this long-lasting bad boy.

Once again, Fuente makes a good cigar that I completely enjoyed and I believe that I actually liked this one better than the Flor Fina 858 which has been my previous, to date.  I rate it at a solid A.

Tatuaje Havana VI Nobles, Red Band

“Blended in the style of the flavorful yet Medium Bodied Cuban Cigars.
Cigars are rolled in Nicaragua using select Nicaraguan tobaccos and classic cuban blending with a beautiful Cuban triple-cap. ”

I smoked this little treat last weekend at Hideaway Harbor. After this one, I think I am going to have to update my Top 5 Favorites.

This smoke started smooth and never lost smoothness all the way to the end. It had a earthy, woodsy taste to it and was just an incredible smoke. It wasn’t ever hot or harsh. I’d have to rate this cigar at a solid A because it was so good. It cost $7.60 where I bought it, but since then I have found it for $7 at another store. I’ll be picking some more of these up again and am anxious to try the other sizes.

Mountain View Pinot Noir, Carneros

We tried this new wine (new to us) at Into The Glass in Grapevine. It was full-bodied and fruity Pinot Noir, which is the reason that I really like Pinot Noir.

From the site:
Pinot Noir put Mountain View on the map in 1986 when we introduced our Napa Carneros blend to rave reviews. This wine is a lovely medium weight Pinot Noir with layers of herbal notes and cherry, plums; cloves and modest oak. The pedigree of premium Carneros fruit is highlighted in this eminently drinkable offering.
